The rainbow is a sign and covenant from God promising that He would never bring another global flood to destroy all flesh. The rainbow has been taken and used as symbol of sin; ancient cultures did the same things, as our culture is doing today. So, even though the LGBTQ community has taken the rainbow and used it for a flag and a symbol of pride for gender, marriage and so. As Christians we need to remember that the rainbow belongs to God, and we need to know that history in the book of Genesis. Especially Genesis 1-11, because it is foundational to the rest of the Bible.
Isaiah 9:3 ESV
For the look on their faces bears witness against them;
they proclaim their sin like Sodom;
they do not hide it.
Woe to them!
For they have brought evil on themselves.
As I stated before the verse in Isaiah, Genesis 1-11 is foundational to the rest of the Bible, as well as the gospel message. Genesis 1-11 tells us where sin came from and why we need a savior. So now let's see What God has to say about the rainbow and its purpose.
Genesis 9:8-17 ESV
8Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9 “Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you, 10and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark; it is for every beast of the earth. 11I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
The first institution created by God on day 6 of creation, marriage, between the first man (Adam)and the first women (Eve) this is why marriage is between one man and one woman.
Genesis 2:24-25 ESV
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
Here is another verse pointing back to that history in Genesis from God himself, when the religious leaders of the day asked Jesus about marriage.
Matthew 19:4-6 ESV
4He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.
Genesis 1:27 says that on day 6 of creation, there are only two genders male and female.
Genesis 1:27 ESV
27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
As Christians it's our responsibility to give answers (1 Peter 3:15) to the skeptical questions of the day and stand on the authority of the Word of God. We need to remember God’s Word never changes regardless of what the world says. The gospel hasn’t changed, and the answer ultimately is the gospel of Jesus Christ.
